Many companies share your payment history with credit bureaus. These companies are called credit furnishers and can play a significant role in determining your credit score.

Credit furnishers are companies that report your revolving credit accounts, like credit cards and loans, to credit bureaus. Credit furnishers include banks, credit card issuers, utilities, and collection agencies. For example, when you make a late payment, the credit furnisher will report the late payment to the credit bureau. The late payment will then be reflected on your credit report and impact your credit score. However, not all creditors report your payment history to the credit bureaus, including most subscriptions, landlords, utilities, and even some of the Buy Now Pay Later providers.

If you're looking to raise your credit score and have a solid repayment history with non-reporting creditors or subscriptions, you may want to add these to your credit report. This will show credit bureaus your responsible credit management skills and help improve your credit score. You can do this by requesting that the credit furnisher report your payment history to the credit bureau. Experian, the credit reporting bureau, offers Experian Boost, which provides a free way to report utility and subscription payments. Some paid services will report your monthly rental payments: Rental Karma, boostRscore, ESUSU, and Rock the Score. Then there are companies like Grow Credit (for a fee) and Altro (free), which will report monthly subscription payments like Netflix, Adobe, and Amazon. Of course, only add these if you consistently pay on time.

You can do a few things to minimize the impact of late payments reported by credit furnishers:

  • If you have a good payment history, keep making on-time payments. This will help offset the negative effects of any late payments.

  • You can try to negotiate with the credit furnisher to have the late payment removed from your credit report. This is not always possible, but it is worth a try.

  • You can dispute the late payment with the credit bureau.

If the credit bureau finds that the late payment was reported in error, they will remove it from your credit report.

If you have late payments reported by credit furnishers, it is essential to take action to minimize the impact on your credit score. By following the tips above, you can help ensure that your credit score remains high, even with late payments on your credit report.
